Safety regulations for wheelchair ramps

Feb 11, 2025 Leave a message

The safety specifications of wheelchair ramps mainly include the following aspects:

1. Slope requirements: The transverse slope of the wheelchair ramp should not be greater than 1:50, and the longitudinal slope should not be greater than 1:12. When conditions are limited and the height difference between the starting and ending points of the slope section is not greater than 150mm, the longitudinal slope should not be greater than 1:10. The lifting height of each section of the ramp should not be greater than 750mm.

2. Clear width: The clear width of the wheelchair ramp should not be less than 1.20m. This ensures the use of different types of wheelchairs, including manual and electric wheelchairs.

3. Platform setting: The clear width of the starting point, end point and rest platform of the wheelchair ramp should not be less than the clear width of the ramp, and the horizontal length should not be less than 1.50m. This helps wheelchair users adjust their direction or take a short rest.

4. Handrail setting: When the height of the wheelchair ramp is greater than 300mm and the longitudinal slope is greater than 1:20, handrails should be set on both sides, and the handrails of the ramp and the rest platform should be continuous. This helps improve safety, especially when the slope is steep.

5. Safety blocking measures: Safety blocking measures should be taken on the airside of wheelchair ramps with handrails, such as widening the ramp surface and platform surface 300mm outward from the outer edge of the handrail, or setting a safety stop with a height of not less than 50mm.

These specifications are designed to ensure the safety and comfort of wheelchair users when using ramps.
